Is “board and care” different from “assisted living” in Los Angeles?
The label follows licensed capacity, not a different license. Of Los Angeles's 156 licensed homes, 110 are small board-and-care homes licensed for 6 or fewer residents, 2 are mid-size homes licensed for 7–15, and 44 are larger assisted-living communities licensed for 16 or more (CDSS license-capacity records, refreshed September 13, 2026). All hold the same state RCFE license.
Does Medi-Cal help pay for assisted living in Los Angeles?
